"One of the more unique and wackier places on this list is none other than the House of The Trembling Madness. Many of the reviews of this place say that it is a ‘MUST-visit’ and 'If you’re looking for unusual, fun, esoteric and eclectic then this is your place.’ With its unusual name, many people are drawn to this place by its pure aesthetic alone, with its famous 900 year old wall, the House of The Trembling Madness resides in the first Norman building built in York, the wall is all that remains of its original structure. When you come here though, you won’t want to leave when you see their generous selection of world crafted beers on offer, and their big portions of hearty pub meals all at very reasonable prices, such as their large steak and stout pie with mash and peas, at only 13 USD!"

It has several alluring craft beers on draught – various Brooklyn, Bad Seed, Black Jack and Great Heck beers on this visit – and it sits above one of Britain’s best-stocked off-licences (all bottles available to drink-in, corkage £1.25). So that drinkers can line their stomachs in style, HoTM also serves a repertoire of gutsy, filling hot dishes and picky platters."

"The House of the Trembling Madness is a great place to drink in York if you’re into quirky and unusual buildings. The original Trembling Madness is much smaller, quirkier and has a very odd charm to it, whereas the newly refurbished one is much bigger and has a classier vibe to it; it also has a shop downstairs where you can purchase your drinks for a fraction of the price and then take them upstairs to drink in the bar/restaurant!. Whichever one you visit, you’re sure to delight in its weirdness and enjoy wonderfully crafted drinks."

It’s a vibrant, relaxed place to eat and drink, with kids or without, and a good option if you’d like a range of food and drink to choose from and take away (or eat there). There’s a changing rota of pop-up bars and restaurants, but if you imagine craft ales, edgy cocktails and some of the best street food in town, you’re not too far from the mark."

"Pickering Park first opened in the summer of 1911, making this one of Hull’s oldest recreation grounds!. The 25-acre park offers both toddler and junior play areas, with various equipment including an exciting trim trail for the older kids. Activity towers with rope climbs and slides, rock climbing walls, monkey bars, a basket swing, rockers, and cute animal-themed obstacle courses are just part of the many features the park has to offer."

"If you want vegan goodies then this is a fantastic place to visit. Billed as Cottingham’s only vegetarian coffee shop, Blondes, caters incredibly well for vegans. They do vegan cakes, vegan freakshakes and also sell a range of vegan products which you can take home with you."

"Newcomer Barleys is causing a storm down Newland Avenue – and for good reason!. Barleys is 100% vegan and offers a great range of deli style products as well as a range of fantastic sandwiches – my personal favourite is the chicken caesar wrap. Barleys has only been open for a couple of weeks now and I’ve visited more times than I care to admit."

"A vegan deli that also serves incredible coffee, Barley’s is an absolute must visit if you want to eat healthy or cut out the meat and dairy. Barley’s is truly a vegan and vegetarian paradise, with a myriad of fresh vegan sandwiches, deli treats and even a dairy-free cheese counter."

"If there was one serious oversight in my original 2009 “budget eats” guide, it was not paying full due respect to this vegan veteran. Its soups, dhals, top-ranking falafel, hummus and tinas (fried carrot patties of remarkable ersatz-creaminess; it’s the coconut milk apparently), are the stuff of local legend and tasty enough to have persuaded many sceptical carnivores to come around. You can eat in of course, in the bright, surprisingly Andalucian-styled cafe-restaurant (El Piano has sister branches in southern Spain), but the takeaway hatch is where you will find a serious bargain."
