Top things to do in York, England
"York's National Railway Museum – the biggest in the world, with more than 100 locomotives – is well-presented and crammed with fascinating stuff. It is laid out on a vast scale and is housed in a series of giant railway sheds – allow at least two hours to do it justice. The museum also now includes a high-tech simulator experience of riding on the Mallard (£4), which set the world speed record for a steam locomotive in 1938 (126mph)."

Best Museums in York for Kids
"The last museum we visited was one we stumbled on by accident, escaping the rain while walking in the lovely Museum Gardens. And I was really glad we did because it turned out to combine what Charlie was learning about at school right then: Romans, with his greatest passion, Virtual Reality dinosaurs!. Again it started with the chance to practise some archaeological skills, brushing sand and dirt off artificial dino bones and fossils, something younger kids will love."

"Having parked right next to the museum gardens, our very first destination in York was the Yorkshire Museum. The Yorkshire museum is set within a ten-acre botanical garden, established in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society. This garden is incredibly peaceful and the perfect place to walk around ."

"This historic site was discovered by accident, when it was scheduled to be destroyed. The oldest parts of Barley Hall date from about 1360, but until the 1980s the house was hidden under a more modern brick façade. The medieval house was once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York."

Top things to do in Leeds, England
"Leeds' most interesting museum was originally built in 1996 to house armour and weapons from the Tower of London, but subsequently expanded to cover 3000 years of combat and self-defence, becoming home to the national collections. The exhibits are as varied as they are fascinating, covering subjects such as jousting, fencing and Indian elephant armour. To get here, walk east along the river from Centenary Footbridge (approx 10 minutes), or take the free boat from Granary Wharf outside Leeds train station's southern entrance."

The Top 10 Museums And Galleries In York
"The Wars of the Roses, the Plantagenets, and Richard III are events and characters embedded in the history of York, so what better place to get to grips with one of the main players than inside the city walls?. Located in Monk Bar gatehouse, where the top floor was commissioned by Richard himself, the Richard III Experience takes you on a journey through the king’s short-lived reign, including what life was like in York during the late 15th century, and a selection of changing exhibitions. While there, don’t miss the chance to walk around the city walls, arguably York’s greatest monument, and make for the sister Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar, easily reached in around route that even includes a few pubs along the way."

The best pubs with rooms for a truly Yorkshire stay when this is all over
"The mullioned windows, stone flags and thick walls of the ancient inn – deep-set in stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales and close to Bolton Abbey – drip authentic character and the great long bar in the taproom is a welcoming rallying point for tired walkers and hungry guests. The hotel’s fires, snugs and carpeted little rooms may flirt with the chintzy on occasion, but they provide the perfect places to retreat and relax with views over the river and up the fells. The restaurant is a pleasure to eat in; with oak floors and panelling, a log-burning stove and, in places, views of the river, it’s a great spot to enjoy locally sourced dishes."

Top things to do in Yorkshire
"One of England's most impressive collections of sculpture is scattered across the formidable 18th-century estate of Bretton Park, 200-odd hectares of lawns, fields and trees. A bit like the art world's equivalent of a safari park, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park showcases the work of dozens of sculptors both national and international. The park is partly a homage to local heroes Barbara Hepworth (1903−75), who was born in Wakefield, and Henry Moore (1898−1986), though more of their works are on display at the Hepworth Wakefield."
