12 Best Things to Do in York, United Kingdom
"Located just a short stroll from the city center is the National Railway Museum, which tells the story of rail transport in Britain. Home to more than a million artifacts, as well as over a hundred shiny steam trains, locomotives, and wagonway vehicles, it is remarkably the world’s largest railway museum. Established in 1975, the museum now occupies a series of gigantic railway sheds that were once the North York locomotive depot."

"We love the railway museum not least because Rebecca’s dad is a train enthusiast and could spend hours in here reading every tiny detail on every sign next to every exhibition!. Great for kids with live shows and hands-on activities. Entry is free, but if you can afford it, it’s nice to make a small donation to keep this attraction thriving in York for years to come."

"As the name implies, York’s Merchant Adventurers were merchants. They traded along the English coast, northern Europe and sometimes as far as the Baltic and Iceland, bringing back an assortment of desired goods to York. The city was an important river port and the wealthiest city in Northern England, second only to London for most of the Middle Ages, allowing the merchants to make enough money to build the Hall between 1357 and 1361."

"Occupying the 91-metre promontory between the north and south bays are the remnants of Scarborough’s Medieval castle. This indomitable roost over the North Sea was a hill fort in the Bronze Age, and in the fourth century was used as a signal station by the Romans. You can now locate the ruins of an Anglo-Saxon chapel, built around 1000 on the site of the signal station."

"The Wars of the Roses, the Plantagenets, and Richard III are events and characters embedded in the history of York, so what better place to get to grips with one of the main players than inside the city walls?. Located in Monk Bar gatehouse, where the top floor was commissioned by Richard himself, the Richard III Experience takes you on a journey through the king’s short-lived reign, including what life was like in York during the late 15th century, and a selection of changing exhibitions. "The quirky Treasurer’s House lies directly behind York Minster and was extensively renovated in the late 19th century. However, the renovations were not of their time but were designed to emulate historical houses of different eras so that the owner, Frank Green, could ‘authentically’ house his collection of historical artefacts. From the timber frame medieval feel of the grand entrance hall to the Victorian bedrooms, this is a house that will keep you guessing!"

We also had to wait 10 minutes for them (fast food?).The donner was the saltiest thing I have ever tasted; I only had one fork full and could not continue. The chicken kebab was dried out. Both were served on a weird pancake sort of thing. The garlic sauce was like a thick sour cream. The only thing that stopped me taking them back was the fact that the woman serving was abrupt and scary!"

Top 10 budget restaurants, cafes and pubs in York
"The Shambles Kitchen dishes up a few other items (cakes and smoothies, wraps, a daily soup such as chickpea, lentil and harissa), but there is no doubting the main draw: its pulled pork sandwich. Dripping in its own juices and long on flavour, the meat is slow-cooked for 12 hours and served on fat buns with a peppy raw slaw and a choice of sauces – go for the smoked apple. At £5.50 a pop, these are not particularly cheap baps, but it is tasty tackle and you are putting money into a business where, in stark contrast to the many chains which crisscross York, everything is cooked from scratch using local ingredients."
